Time for a Public Service Announcement here. I want to thank reader Diane Holban for bringing this to my attention weeks ago. Sadly I underestimated the treachery and deviousness of the left. This savage rumor about the Draft being reinstated refuses to die and now already discredited CBS news gives new life to it. They did an entire piece about the draft being reinstated without once mentioning the following facts that I lifted from Mr. Rod Powers at Freerepublic. Both the democrats and their shills at CBS news are counting on Americans being too complacent to do a little research. Well both Mr. Powers and I have checked on this and I can verify that what he writes below is true.....

Let's take a look at the real facts:
First and foremost, one must understand that the President does not have the authority to re-institute the draft. In order for a draft to be implemented, Congress would have to pass a specific law to authorize it.

What's that? You, in the back row. Could you repeat the question, please?
Oh. The email you read stated that Congress is already considering two such bills, and that the Bush administration is quietly pushing them through?

You're speaking of Senate Bill 89, introduced by Senator Ernest F. Hollings (D-SC), and House Resolution 163, introduced by Representative Charles B. Rangel (D-NY). Both bills would require two years of military service (or community service for those who are medically unqualified) for every male and female in the United States, between the ages of 18 and 26.
These are the only two "draft" legislation bills which are currently active. First and foremost, please note that both bills were authored and introduced by Democrats, not Republicans. Senator Hollings and Mr. Rangel introduced the legislation over a year ago (January 2003), as a means of protest against a potential invasion of Iraq. Congress immediately stuck them "in committee" to die (that's what Congress does with bills that have absolutely no chance of passing). The two bills have languished there, ever since, with absolutely no action being taken.
Both bills would require every single male and female between the ages of 18 and 26 to serve two years in the military (or community service). Hollings version has 0 co-sponsors, and Rangel's bill 13 fellow travelers who read like a who's who of seditious democrats. Folks, these bills have ZERO chances of passing in a Congress controlled by Republicans. More about this idiocy, later.

There are no other draft-related bills currently pending. None. Zero, Nada, Zippo.
Any more questions about these bills? No? Good, let's continue. The Bush Administration has stated over and over and over again that they have no plans to re-institute a draft, that they don't think a draft is necessary, and they don't believe a draft would even be effective with the type of military we have today. Ladies and gentlemen, they couldn't have made their views any clearer. The current administration is against a draft. It's that simple.

A day late but certainly no dollar short, here is my Monday Trench Talk for those of you who don't have the honor to work at your local party HQ. The latest round of polls in Nevada show the President up anywhere from 5-9% percent and that has to hurt the JFK people. They are counting on Nevada being a swing state and have invested heavily here in advertising, ground game and registering fraudulent voters. On Saturday evening, I put in an Academy Award worthy performance for the benefit of the local democrats manning a Kerry/Voter registration booth at Street Vibrations. Playing the part of a sympathetic cop who was upset about the President allowing the Assault Weapons Ban to sunset. The dems swooned and I could just feel the message being sent out on their single brainwave network...."oooohh...see not all cops are fascists!"

Having established my bonafides, I was able to milk them for information on how many voters they had registered, a whopping dozen. Now that may sound like a decent turnout but remember that they were surrounded by perhaps 100,000 pedestrians in the area all day Saturday. Given the money they had to spend to procure the booth, it seems a pitiable return on their investment. Then again though we are talking about socialists, if they had any business sense they'd be Republicans. Since they don't, they want the government to provide for their every want and always on the back of the taxpayer.

Speaking of which, as is my recent Monday custom, I reported to County Republican HQ at 0800 and began fielding phonecalls. How is it that democrats and cranks can find time to stiff in complaining phone calls to the Republican party instead of being out looking for a job? Twice the other day I had jesters calling in to request information that they could have obtained from a phonebook. (Of course looking a number up in a phone book is a collosal effort to a lazy leftist). Both complained of the recent Social Security changes and after being given the congressional phone numbers they wanted, implored me to do everything I could to prevent President Bush from winning reelection. The delusion of the left never fails to impress me. HELLO!!!! If I'm working at County Republican HQ, then it should be self-evident that I am doing everything I can to help the President WIN. I must confess though that at least they are entertaining those pesky little democrats...

Once again real life is managing to insert itself in a brazen attempt to minimize my posts. This time around it's the annual Street Vibrations tribute to those icons of Americana, Harley Davidson motorcycles and rock music. Suffice it to say that I've been putting in a lot of overtime and cramming some studying into this past week as well. None of which has prevented me from staying abreast of the latest treachery to emanate from the left. Perhaps someone in my reading audience can illuminate me with an answer to this question. Just what type of crack is Kofi Annan smoking?

In the world according to Kofi, the U.S. liberation of Iraq was an illegal invasion. So what dear Kofi does that tell us about the UN? Seventeen UN resolutions passed against Iraq over a decade and nothing was done to remove the cause of those resolutions, an intransigent Saddam Hussein. So then the US liberates Iraq with a coalition of 31 countries in support and 3 of which provided combat troops in addition to our own. What does the liberation of 25 million people earn for us? Spiteful and ingracious verbal attacks from the biggest hypocrite since the term was first defined. Of course Annan's self interest isn't served by a liberated Iraq as we now learn from the UN Oil for Food scandal exploding in the face of Kofi and family. Profiteering off the misery of millions is apparently nothing new to the elite leftists at the UN. As an African, Annan should be grateful for the 15 BILLION in American tax dollars that President Bush has pledged to Africa to fight AIDS. Especially when Kofi has to know that roughly 14 of those billion will end up lining the Swiss accounts of all his tinpot dictator buddies. There was no such windfall under the regime of IMPEACHED ex-president Clinton and yet never did Kofi condemn Clinton for his interventions. I can only think that 15 Billion must be chump change to Kingpin Kofi and his cronies on the take for Oil for Food.

It is long past time for the US to condemn the UN and serve the entire rotten mess with eviction papers. Their odious socialism is bettered suited to the salons of Paris or some other "progressive" Capital where I'm certain the hookers and cabbies will be just as employable as their New York counterparts were. If the UN exists to offer censure in the form of meaningless resolutions which it lacks the means to enforce, then it really is nothing more than a high school debate team which happens to be multilingual and relatively zit free. The United States has always provided the impetus for UN peacekeeping operations and the dirty little secret that Jean Querry doesn't want you to know is this. The UN is militarily powerless.

M'sieur le Condiment goes around the country offering high minded pronouncements about the quagmire he sees in Iraq. Kerry's solution to the problem is his continual insistence that as president he would involve the UN and see to it that they bear more of the burden of the fighting in Iraq is utter nonsense. Neither the French, the Germans nor any other NATO country has combat troops they are willing to commit to Iraq. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Western allies have suckled at the teat of American Military largesse. They have stripped their own forces to the bone, only the already involved British maintaining forces of any consequence. So what is the real alternative? Nigerian or Chinese troops commited to the fight? Hah, the left would love to see it but it would never happen. Once again reality intrudes to slap leftists in the face. Without American military power, the UN is nothing more than another shill for the left. A loud and obnoxious drain on our tax dollars that I daresay most Americans would be just as happy to see gone.

Now then, I've been fortunate enough to introduce several friends this week to the charms of the lovely and talented Ann Coulter. Since it is impossible to get too much of such a combination of brains and beauty she is once again WKWRs Friday Featurette.

So there I was, manning the trenches at County Republican HQ, minding my own business with a cold rain falling outside. I spied a vehicle pulling into the parking lot, covered with Kerry for President placards. An elderly driver got out and shuffled towards our door. He entered and I could clearly see a "Veteran for Kerry" button on the man's chest. I approached him and asked if I could be of assistance. In what passes for subtlety for leftists he proclaimed himself to be an independent voter who was "slightly" leaning towards Kerry and was hoping that I could provide a brochure on the Republican platform. I did so and he was unmoved. It was now apparent that his entire intent was merely disrupt our operations, eat up our literature and waste our time.

I asked the "cough" gentleman if there was anything else I could assist him with and he said that he wanted to know about the War on Terror. Once again noting the button, I asked him what war he was a veteran of and he replied that he had served in WW2 and Korea. I told him that like WW2, this was was thrust upon us and we did not seek it but that now we needed to see it through. Confounded, he then shifted to the economy stating that he was tired of seeing unemployed people. I replied that ironically, Nevada had just released unemployment figures for August which stood at 4%, the lowest in many years. He said he cared about the national unemployment figure. I told him that the most recent figure had been 5.5%, lower than during the so-called IMPEACHED ex-president Clinton boom years. Undeterred by facts and logic, he continued to mumble that now THERE had been a president and he then shuffled off to the door.

I know, you can't argue with a leftist and use facts and logic. They simply bounce off them. Reality has no bearing on people that live in a dream world. Well, that's my Tale from the Trench for this week. Actually I have another about a fiercely Republican woman who was mighty P.O.ed about the youth of today but I'm saving that for later this week. In the meantime, if you can spare even a couple hours, find the local campaign headquarters or County Republican HQ and volunteer. We are absolutely screaming for volunteers right now.

Sorry for last week folks. Some of you know that I was in Las Vegas attending a political action seminar but for those of you who didn't, well pardon the absence, let's try and make it up. I note that all of the latest polls have Jean Querry in freefall. I am not complacent. I will work harder now, as though he were ten points ahead. Tomorrow I will be at Republican HQ early in order to do what I can to help President Bush win on November 2.

I did note during my leave that CBS continues to stand by it's ludicrous story and even more ludicrous anchorman. Every forged documents examiner in the free world has by now been consulted and everyone of them agrees the Dan Blather memoes were forged. CBS would go a long way towards healing the suspicions of the American people by simply admitting the documents are forged and apologizing for it's unending, biased attacks on the President.

Now then, reaching back to last week, I need to get the Friday Featurette up so that tomorrow I can start the week off proper with the Monday Musing, my observations from Nevada ground zero. This past week's honoree? The lovely and talented Melanie Morgan, conservative talk show host and activist....

Got to announce some changes around here at least until the election is over. Some of you may know that I am putting in a few hours a week at County Republican HQ doing volunteer staff work. What the hell, I promised myself in 2000 that I would make every effort personally to see that an election like that never occurs again. That means sacrifice somewhere else and unfortunately for you food fans, it means that my Monday cooking has pretty much gone the wayside. (Some of you may be breathing a sigh of relief that I haven't yet caused an outbreak of trichinosis.) Therefore, until Monday November 8, 2004 there will be no more Monday recipes.

In it's place we will have the Monday Musing which will be notes and observations of my time at the local ground zero for election news. If any of you have the time, the local HQ be it here or wherever you are can ALWAYS use help, whether answering phones, handling office chores, passing out stickers and signs or just chatting up locals who drop by. Yesterday I registered several people to vote, accepted a donation to the Bush Cheney campaign, (unfortunately the donor misspelled my name on the check, putting Bush-Cheney instead of the grammatically correct Villa). I also answered phones and had to endure some democrat cranks who call in just to eat up phone time apparently. Let me tell you, the phone rings off the hook at this time of the year so if you can spare a few hours and you want a fresh perspective on the American political process, volunteer at your local party HQ, from whatever side you occupy.

This weekend is one of contrasts. Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the attacks on our Nation of September 11, 2001. Certainly a somber moment and in case any of you out there need reminding of why we are fighting. I give you the following photograph from that day.

The short memories of those on the left never cease to amaze me. This is one of the nastiest Presidential campaigns I can recall and the latest headlines? CBS news publishes documents which call into question President Bush's National Guard service. Of course this is the same tired story that has been vetted at least 4 times already. This isn't enough for the Communist Broadcasting Service. Dan Blather won't rest until he smears the President sufficiently to allow his beloved party of sedition a chance to recapture the Presidency. The absolutely side-splitting factor about the non-story though is really that most any reasonable person (which precludes any green party member and a whole slew of dems) now knows that these documents are forgeries. What makes the story even better is that once they were shown to be forgeries, the dems immediately claimed a Republican setup. Now I'm the first to admit the superior intellectual capacity of conservatives but I find it hard to believe that anyone of our operatives could have dreamed up this scheme.

The whole point being that Wendell Wilkie, in his nastiest mood never thought once to attack President Roosevelt for his conduct of WW2. It simply wasn't done. The dems are the first to holler about Republicans keeping people from voting, even when the charge is demonstrably false and no proof is offered, they cling to the canard. They ceaselessly cite fiction as fact and claim it is all examples of Republican voter fraud. However, any assessment of FACTS shows that it is the democrat party that continually soils the American electoral process with massive fraud and party machines that work to perpetuate democrat dominance even today in Chicago, Philadelphia and St. Louis. Gifts of cigarets and whiskey to homeless, unregistered drunks who are taken to polling places and told who to vote for, enrollment of dead, felons, non-citizens and non-existent people are all democrat tricks. Now as in 2000 I want all of you to watch the election closely. I pray the election isn't close, that President Bush rolls up 320 electoral votes or more and the party of sedition is sent reeling back to their hovels but if it isn't, then let us see who doth protesteth too much and who files the first lawsuit. My money is on the dems....

As a general rule, those frequent visitors know that I usually have something to say on Wednesdays. Especially the Wed. after a primary election. Normally I would too. For instance I think touch screen voting is much more convenient than the old punch cards or scantrons. On the other hand, it really cheeses me off that the screen gives you a choice of English or Spanish. Excuse me, but this IS an election and as such, it ought to be conducted in the coin of the realm so to speak. In other words, English should be the only language offered on the ballot. If you cannot conduct your voting right in English, then perhaps you ought to be expending a little more energy on learning the language before you engage the voting booth.

I had the opportunity yesterday as well to attend a really frightening intelligence seminar put on by a recent retiree from Army Counterintelligence. Very interesting man. I would have wagered before yesterday that Al Qaeda did NOT possess WMD. Now I'm not so certain, in fact this instructor seems to think the opposite. Obviously, though it pains me to admit it, he is probably far better informed on this issue than I am. The implications of a use of WMD on us is staggering. The economic blow would be massive. The immediate desire to strike back will be overwhelming. The problem is, since we are at war with various stateless groups, to whom do we address the nukes? We can't turn 1/4 of the earth's surface into glass no matter how gratifying that might seem. This instructor also echoed the warning that we should fully expect to see terror activity immediately prior to our election in order to alter the outcome. Is it any wonder who the terrorists would like to see as President?....hmmm M'sieur?

I know I'm behind and it seems like no matter how much I'd like to post something to my devoted readers, whether it be a recipe, news or featurettes other real life events seem to jump in the way. So first off, I'd like to get this past week's featurette posted and make some commentary on the just past RNC.

It's becoming rapidly apparent that the RNC provided a measurable boost to the prospects of President Bush. Most every poll released since has shown a bump for him of at minimum 4 pts and most are more. There really shouldn't be much guesswork as to why. Every speaker delivered a message which was in itself readily discernable and all of which collectively pointed to the Republican agenda. In other words, American voters tuning into the convention actually got a message from this convention. The message of the DNC? "I'm John Kerry and I was in Vietnam so don't question either my politics or my patriotism". Kerry assiduously avoided mention of his dismal career in the Senate or his overachieving in the fine art of flip flopping. Americans were and are ready for an optimistic candidate who has a vision, articulates it and makes the Nation feel secure. President Bush succeeded on all counts.

Of course the democrats have to still be smarting after the lashing they received at the verbal woodshed from one of their own. Zell Miller most certainly embodies a throwback to an era when a congressman could call them like he saw them and wouldn't shy away from a duel to defend his honor. None of that would have mattered however had the dems simply provided a meaningful message to the American people. Instead it was a festival of Bush-bashing and inarticulate speeches capped by MamaT droning on in tongues, even when she spoke English. It was a giant put off to the swing voters who weren't given any meaningful reason to vote for Kerry.

Another nail in the Kerry coffin was the Friday jobs report. Number of new jobs created was 144,000. My estimation was that anything over 100k was good for Bush and 150k would have been the final warbling note of the weight challenged woman warming up her voice. While 144k doesn't push us over that mark, it certainly makes the libs argument about a sluggish economy sound hollow. Much like Senator Kerry's suit. Couple the job creation with a drop in the unemployment rate and you've really crippled the dems claims. Not that facts and logic often get in the way of liberal thinking.

In any event, I'm moving along here to the featurette. This week, an assemblage of ladies who combine beauty and brains....Babes for Bush!!

Tonight Georgia Senator Zell Miller, a Democrat delivered the keynote address to the Republican National Convention. Yes, a democrat, now which party is more inclusive? I didn't see too many Republicans at the DNC. Ultimately however, that is of little consequence, I am going to post here, the text of Senator Miller's speech because he takes apart the abysmal record of John Kerry's Senate career. Kerry may think he is qualified to be Commander in Chief because he managed to keep his Swift boat afloat for 4 months. Kerry may be sufficiently deluded to think that a 19 year Senate career with no landmark legislation and a legacy of switching sides on every major issue may qualify him as a deep thinker, he may even truly believe that his money and Boston Brahim roots preordain his ascendance to the Presidency. If he does believe all that, then he is engaged in self aggrandizement and delusion of the worst sort.

Of course these traits seem common to Massachusetts politicians. Tonight, a Georgian asked some simple questions of the democratic party and Americans in general. Where has Kerry been with leadership and statesmanship? What does Kerry propose to arm the military with and most importantly, what happened to the time when politicians of both persuasions considered the interests of America first and foremost beyond petty party politics? Read Senator Miller's speech below if you missed it on TV and ask yourself, where have all the statesmen gone who could bridge the divide between the parties?

The following is the full text of remarks made by Senator Zell Miller, as prepared for delivery.

Since I last stood in this spot, a whole new generation of the Miller Family has been born: Four great grandchildren.

Along with all the other members of our close-knit family -- they are my and Shirley's most precious possessions.

And I know that's how you feel about your family also.

Like you, I think of their future, the promises and the perils they will face.

Like you, I believe that the next four years will determine what kind of world they will grow up in.

And like you, I ask which leader is it today that has the vision, the willpower and, yes, the backbone to best protect my family?

The clear answer to that question has placed me in this hall with you tonight. For my family is more important than my party.

There is but one man to whom I am willing to entrust their future and that man's name is George Bush.

In the summer of 1940, I was an eight-year-old boy living in a remote little Appalachian valley.

Our country was not yet at war but even we children knew that there were some crazy men across the ocean who would kill us if they could.

President Roosevelt, in his speech that summer, told America "all private plans, all private lives, have been in a sense repealed by an overriding public danger."

In 1940 Wendell Wilkie was the Republican nominee.
And there is no better example of someone repealing their "private plans" than this good man. He gave Roosevelt the critical support he needed for a peacetime draft, an unpopular idea at the time. And he made it clear that he would rather lose the election than make national security a partisan campaign issue. Shortly before Wilkie died he told a friend, that if he could write his own epitaph and had to choose between "here lies a president" or "here lies one who contributed to saving freedom", he would prefer the latter. Where are such statesmen today?

Where is the bi-partisanship in this country when we need it most?

Now, while young Americans are dying in the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because of the Democrat's manic obsession to bring down our Commander-in- Chief.

What has happened to the party I've spent my life working in?

I can remember when Democrats believed that it was the duty of America to fight for freedom over tyranny.

It was Democratic President Harry Truman who pushed the Red Army out of Iran, who came to the aid of Greece when Communists threatened to overthrow it, who stared down the Soviet blockade of West Berlin by flying in supplies and saving the city.
Time after time in our history, in the face of great danger, Democrats and Republicans worked together to ensure that freedom would not falter. But not today.

Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today's Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator. And nothing makes this Marine madder than someone calling American troops occupiers rather than liberators. Tell that to the one-half of Europe that was freed because Franklin Roosevelt led an army of liberators, not occupiers.
Tell that to the lower half of the Korean Peninsula that is free because Dwight Eisenhower commanded an army of liberators, not occupiers.

Tell that to the half a billion men, women and children who are free today from the Baltics to the Crimea, from Poland to Siberia, because Ronald Reagan rebuilt a military of liberators, not occupiers.

Never in the history of the world has any soldier sacrificed more for the freedom and liberty of total strangers than the American soldier. And, our soldiers don't just give freedom abroad, they preserve it for us here at home.

For it has been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest.

It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag who gives that protester the freedom to abuse and burn that flag.

No one should dare to even think about being the Commander in Chief of this country if he doesn't believe with all his heart that our soldiers are liberators abroad and defenders of freedom at home.

But don't waste your breath telling that to the leaders of my party today. In their warped way of thinking America is the problem, not the solution.

They don't believe there is any real danger in the world except that which America brings upon itself through our clumsy and misguided foreign policy.

It is not their patriotism - it is their judgment that has been so sorely lacking. They claimed Carter's pacifism would lead to peace. They were wrong.

They claimed Reagan's defense buildup would lead to war.
They were wrong.

And, no pair has been more wrong, more loudly, more often than the two Senators from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.

Together, Kennedy/Kerry have opposed the very weapons system that won the Cold War and that is now winning the War on Terror.

Listing all the weapon systems that Senator Kerry tried his best to shut down sounds like an auctioneer selling off our national security but Americans need to know the facts.

The B-1 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, dropped 40% of the bombs in the first six months of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The B-2 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered air strikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Hussein's command post in Iraq.

The F-14A Tomcats, that Senator Kerry opposed, shot down Khadifi's Libyan MIGs over the Gulf of Sidra. The modernized F-14D, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered missile strikes against Tora Bora.

The Apache helicopter, that Senator Kerry opposed, took out those Republican Guard tanks in Kuwait in the Gulf War. The F-15 Eagles, that Senator Kerry opposed, flew cover over our Nation's Capital and this very city after 9/11.

I could go on and on and on: Against the Patriot Missile that shot down Saddam Hussein's scud missiles over Israel, Against the Aegis air-defense cruiser, Against the Strategic Defense Initiative, Against the Trident missile, against, against, against.

This is the man who wants to be the Commander in Chief of our U.S. Armed Forces?
U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?

Twenty years of votes can tell you much more about a man than twenty weeks of campaign rhetoric.

Campaign talk tells people who you want them to think you are. How you vote tells people who you really are deep inside.

Senator Kerry has made it clear that he would use military force only if approved by the United Nations.

Kerry would let Paris decide when America needs defending. I want Bush to decide.
John Kerry, who says he doesn't like outsourcing, wants to outsource our national security.
That's the most dangerous outsourcing of all. This politician wants to be leader of the free world. Free for how long?

For more than twenty years, on every one of the great issues of freedom and security, John Kerry has been more wrong, more weak and more wobbly than any other national figure. As a war protestor, Kerry blamed our military.

As a Senator, he voted to weaken our military. And nothing shows that more sadly and more clearly than his vote this year to deny protective armor for our troops in harms way, far-away.

George Bush understands that we need new strategies to meet new threats.
John Kerry wants to re-fight yesterday's war. George Bush believes we have to fight today's war and be ready for tomorrow's challenges. George Bush is committed to providing the kind of forces it takes to root out terrorists.

No matter what spider hole they may hide in or what rock they crawl under.
George Bush wants to grab terrorists by the throat and not let them go to get a better grip.
From John Kerry, they get a "yes-no-maybe" bowl of mush that can only encourage our enemies and confuse our friends.

I first got to know George Bush when we served as governors together. I admire this man.
I am moved by the respect he shows the First Lady, his unabashed love for his parents and his daughters, and the fact that he is unashamed of his belief that God is not indifferent to America.

I can identify with someone who has lived that line in "Amazing Grace," "Was blind, but now I see," and I like the fact that he's the same man on Saturday night that he is on Sunday morning.

He is not a slick talker but he is a straight shooter and, where I come from, deeds mean a lot more than words.

I have knocked on the door of this man's soul and found someone home, a God-fearing man with a good heart and a spine of tempered steel.

The man I trust to protect my most precious possession: my family.

This election will change forever the course of history, and that's not any history. It's our
family's history.

The only question is how. The answer lies with each of us. And, like many generations before us, we've got some hard choosing to do.

Right now the world just cannot afford an indecisive America. Fainthearted, self-indulgence will put at risk all we care about in this world.

In this hour of danger our President has had the courage to stand up. And this Democrat is proud to stand up with him. Thank you.
God Bless this great country and God Bless George W. Bush
.

And I would add....May God Bless Senator Zell Miller.....can I get an Amen?
