I went to the Oracle at Delphi yesterday to consult with Apollo and get my fortune told. For those of you in Sun Valley that means I spoke to the L-Train down in Vegas and we commiserated for awhile about things past and present and really wondered about the generally sorry state of the world. It says something about our own sorry states that we were able to do this while sober and without the benefit of any sort of honky tonk atmosphere or regulated stimulants of any kind. On the other hand he did counsel me to get off my keister and post something on ye olde blog...

I'm feeling pretty disgusted at humanity about now. Regular readers will know that I generally try to inject a little levity into my scathing critiques of the disloyal opposition. The entire Terry Schiavo affair leaves little room for levity. I don't personally understand how we as a nation can standby while our elected officials grandstand, our judges invent law while dishonoring their robes and vows and most importantly while this helpless and innocent woman starves to death simply because along time ago, she happened to marry a piece of human excreta.

Just so I have the whole situation straight in my head. If the Federal Government wants to intervene to save the life of a single woman the left calls that overbearing and cries out to uphold the sanctity of States Rights. (An issue near and dear to my heart.) However, let the Federal government intervene to uphold the invented constitutional right to abortion and the left applauds, calling it the natural course of government to protect the rights of citizens. Funny I don't recall that ol' right to abortion anywhere in the Bill of Rights. So it should come as no surprise then that once again we have a staggering display of hypocrisy on the part of the left that shouldn't catch any educated observer off guard.

Someone please tell me, besides an incredible hatred for America and human life, what do these people stand for? How in hell do they continue to win congressional seats? Most importantly, when are we going to acknowledge that Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Fathers always asserted that the People were the final arbiter. When are we going to insist on judicial appointments that will strictly uphold the law and interpret the Constitution and not invent one and pervert he other. If Terry Schiavo dies, it may well be her great legacy to us that the President's judicial appointments will encounter no more opposition.

Last thing, John or Millie England if you're out there and reading this, can you direct your mouse over to the left hand side of this column and click on the link that says "contact Smilin' Paul". I'd love to hear from y'all and besides, I suspect you might know where someone else is.

Well this is going to get fugly before it's over. Nevada vs. Texas in the first round of the NCAA big dance. Now of course I'm rooting for my beloved Longhorns but around work it's going to be a might touchy workin' as I do with a couple of bona fide Nevada homers. I don't begrudge the Wolfpack mind you, hell if they were playin' any team but Texas I'd be pulling for them. Not that it matters much. No matter which team wins, they're likely to run into a kitchen tool in round 2 since they are both in Illinois' bracket.

In other news, I hope none of you came sniffing around here today hoping for a recipe. We've had a week of absolutely beautiful pre-spring weather. Clear blue skies and low 70s. If that don't getcher ass out of the kitchen not much will. In any event, couple the good weather with my rediscovered taste for cheap American beer and that can only mean one thing....GRILLIN'! Yep, I've been standing my watch at the grill, tending to some perfectly seared steaks and pork tri tips of late while listening to country oldies and throwing down Pabst and Miller. It's a beautiful prelude to summer. All of which means I haven't worked up any new recipes and if you can't already grill a steak, then you need more help than I can provide in this column.

Speaking of help, whose going to help the democrats? No one I hope. Seems even the liberal bible, the New York Times is admitting that Iraq had stockpiles of WMD as late as March 2003 and they were transferred "to a neighboring country" when American forces began the invasion of Iraq. Of course any informed American already knew this. There have been numerous intelligence reports from reliable sources indicating that the transfer of WMD began even before the war began. I have personally been apprised of confidential information supporting this. Of course these reports were pooh-poohed by the mainstream media. Now that the NYT has admitted as much, lets see how long the remainder of the mainstream media can ignore the facts.

Funny thing about facts, liberals never let them get in the way of a good yarn, especially when it's a lie designed to advance their agenda. The President is currently flying around the country on a tour designed to whip up support for social security reform because the democrats play fast and loose with facts when it suits them. Four years ago this same bunch of hypocrites demanded social security reform. Now a Republican President is pushing for just such reform and the dems are in full flight, denying any problem with social security and otherwise appearing quite willing to mortgage our children's future in order to maintain a shred of power. Such is the allure of political power that integrity becomes a rarity and hypocrisy as common as dirt.

I read where Arnold "Next Door" Schwarzenegger is going after California Congressional districts now in an effort to end gerrymandering and political stalemate. I wish him well. Regular readers will know that I am not the biggest fan of the California Governor but I think that he's on the right track here. Fewer than 2 dozen congressional seats were truly competitive in this past election. It was the intent of our Founding Fathers to ensure that the lower house of Congress be the more democratic of the two. Gerrymandering has resulted in districts remaining in one parties' hands for generations. It is absurd and if Congress is truly to be the voice of the people, then gerrymandering needs to end.

In another blow to the left, the U.S. Senate recently voted to curtail multimillion dollar class action lawsuits. You can still hear the howls of the trial lawyers who are demanding that for all the millions they've invested in the democrat party they expect more fight. Now another fight looms over the battle to cut back on awards in medical malpractice suits. Let's hope that the Republicans hold fast here and deny the party of sedition any pleasure.

In a certain sign that the apocalypse can't be far away, it is being whispered in some leftist circles that just maybe President Bush was right about advancing democracy in the Middle East. In an even greater sign, a certain liberal columnist has openly stated that should democracy take root in Iraq and should the Lebanese throw off the yoke of their Syrian oppressors, then by all means, President Bush would be the most deserving choice for the Nobel Peace Prize. Of course I'm not holding my breath on this and I caution y'all not to either. More than likely it's another lefty plot to keep us thinking they really don't hate America like we know they do.

Until next time, "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.."

Damn, I see it's been some time since I got around this here neighborhood. Well I can't say it hasn't been worth it. I've been busy with work and school and ok, y'all caught me, playing with the new computer. I've been screwing around with this whole MP3 thing and I've got to admit, it sure is a nice way to find songs you hadn't heard of in years. Truth to tell, I've been working on a compilation of honky tonk favorites of mine. Just in case we ever manage to get our remodel done and I actually get a new grilling/BBQ area. You know, a collection of classic country music to grill by. In any event, I need a lot more time and I'm open to suggestions from some of you ol' honky tonk heroes that did time with me way back when.

Of course I haven't just been playing hooky from around here. I've also spent some time down at Carson City and the Nevada State Legislature. It's always important to keep an eye on the latest perfidy being set forth in the hallowed halls of Sodom on Carson. For those of you in Rio Linda, the Nevada Legislature convenes every other year for a period of 4 months. From February to June. Nevada is fortunate enough right now to be experiencing a budget surplus. The sometimes Republican Governor has proposed returning the surplus to the citizens in the form of vehicle registration refunds. Of course, with a closely divided Senate and an Assembly dominated by the party of sedition, we will never see it. So far the Legislators of the Battle Born state have managed to stall on any tax refund, have attempted to hide a massive infusion of funds to education, have voted to increase the minimum wage and are trying to tinker with the Second Amendment.

As a taxpayer and lobbyist, I must admit that for only being one month into the legislative session, thats quite a record of accomplishment. At least it is if you hate liberty and self reliance and possess little to no regard for the taxpayer. Oh yeah, lets not forget the inability to comprehend the Constitution. It's really too bad that Las Vegas dominates the political landscape in this state, without it we'd really be a red state.

Its also been interesting to watch the left fall all over themselves of late to acknowledge President Bush and his far sighted policies in the Middle East. The praise is begrudging to be sure but that is the modern left. Even when struck over the head with a tire iron they miss the blindingly obvious. Speaking of folks who could use a tire iron over the head, how about that Commie come lately Ward Churchill, alleged professor at the University of Colorado. Sure what he said is positively loathsome but come on America, this same type of hate speech occurs everyday in colleges and universities across the country.

Of course Americans are fighting back. The latest list of the top ten radio personalities in the country is out and 9 of the top ten are conservatives. The one who isn't? MSNBC's Don Imus, grizzled radio hack and Kerry idolator. On the other hand, since we do own 9 of the top ten spots, how about a look at one of the easier on the eyes models: The lovely Laura Ingraham. I stream her show from WJGR 1320 Jacksonville Florida quite often. Besides being smart, she looks great behind the microphone.

Now I promise to get back here soon. I need to since I whipped up a batch of the best damn chicken-sausage gumbo the other day and I know y'all would starve without my posting recipes.
